Bridgnorth Girls U18 Academy first run out.
Having recently acquired substantial funding from the Local Network Fund , Bridgnorth Girls section has doubled in size and for the first time in its history has run out on the Edgar Davies pitch in front of a considerable audience.
Stourbridge u18s provided the opposition and agreed a training game format to give the teams chance to swap positions around. with Bridgnorth fielding six debutantes they were reliant on the experienced players to support them.
With some initial hesitancy the girls soon found their footing , Stourbridge opened the scoring with two well worked tries. Bridgnorth then got themselves back in the game with a penalty move from Phoebe Lole and Sam Thorpe . The second quarter really brought out the tackling prowess of Sarah McGill and Enya Madden combined with the impressive breaks from Phoebe Madeley and Beckie Price supported by the quick reactions of Jennie Bradshaw by grabbing any loose ball.
Amy Sheldon as scrum half fed the backs well to get them back into the game with a great try from Amy Colburn on the wing who had already proved herself as a great defender going on to be nominated as player of the match by Stourbridge. Bridgnorth then found themselves in the lead of this quarter. Torie Hunt who started off as a forward developed into a back as the game unfolded, finding space and making great breaks .Fiona Hatton started a great move that finished with her feeding Phoebe Lole to cross the line after a 30m sprint. Annie Kyte then swapped to fly half to replace the injured Phoebe L which she did very competently identify the gaps and putting her backs through them with Emily Tearle crashing through Stourbridges' defence whenever possible.
The game then got away a bit from Bridgnorth which Stourbridge took advantage of very well with some impressive rugby skills leading to them finishing with a flurry of tries. Their ten collecting a total of five tries in all . The Bridgnorth Player of the match was Phoebe Madeley who was excellent in both attack and defence and showed great awareness of the game.
Special thanks to Percy Arch and Bryan Smallman for preparing the girls and Zach Baker, Kieran Spencer and Connor Madden for their help on the day.
